Trying to live life right! |
I'm Sara, and I'm trying to live life the way I think it was meant to be lived. I'm trying to balance my goal of weight loss with my life goals of balance, happiness, spirituality, and education. Less concerned about money and more concerned about "doing life". (Thanks for the inspiration Ben, Jed and Pa!) It's kind of tough because it's really easy to get solely focused on one thing and forget about the others. So, wish me luck and enjoy the journey with me! |
Why did I drink the 4 glasses of wine again? Why do I make food/drink decisions that don’t respect my body?
I feel like they are my enemy lately. And I’m finding that the more I tell myself that I can’t have them, the more I eat them. Balance, grasshopper.
When the day is the perfect temperature and you have nothing to do so you can lay on the couch with the windows open and relax?
I love days like today!
Put yourself on autopilot
It can be easier to put yourself on autopilot instead of wasting time with internal dialogs about food when you’re looking to improve your diet. This is an extract of the book “Willpower” by Roy F. Baumeister & John Tierney:“You can try a strategy that psychologists call an “implementation intention”, which is a way to reduce the amount of time and effort you spend controlling your thoughts: Make specific plans for automatic behaviors in certain situations, like what to do when you’re tempted by fattening food at a party.
An implementation intention takes the form of the if-then: If x happens, I will do y. The more you use this technique to transfer control of your behavior to automatic processes, the less effort you will expend. So before you get tempted by the food at a party, you can prepare yourself with a plan like: if they serve chips, I will refuse them all. It’s a simple but surprisingly effective way to gain self-control. By making the decision to pass up the chips an automatic process, you can do it fairly effortlessly even late in the day, when your supply of willpower is low.”
POTUS Pic of the Day: So the President walks into a bar… and he meets Madalyn Starkey, a University of Colorado student who will forever be known as the girl who posed for the greatest photo ever taken of a sitting president.

Awesome
Not too much to say, other than that! :-)
HOW DID YOU GET SO AWESOME?(In honor of TMI Tuesday, because I’m sure there’s a gnarly story in there)
Ok, Jordan has demanded a real answer so here goes…If I am in fact, awesome, then this is where it began. The summer of my 21st year I went on tour with a drum and bugle corps. That meant moving away from home for the summer. Leaving friends and family behind and traveling in a bus with 120 strangers for three months. We slept on gym floors. We rehearsed daily for 16+ hours in the heat, wind, and rain. We performed for packed stadiums of people almost every night. It was wonderful and awful, but I wouldn’t take any of it back.Really what tour was about for me, was taking chances. Going somewhere that would challenge me mentally, physically, and emotionally every single day. It was here that I learned that what I thought was my best effort, wasn’t even close to my full potential. I learned to push through the mental barriers. To detach myself from the physical pain. To give more than I thought was possible and then to give a little bit more.I broke out of my introverted shell and made friends that I still talk to 15 years later. Looking back, I now see that what I learned in drum corps prepared me to become a distance runner. Without these lessons learned at a young age, I don’t know that I would have completed a marathon. Corps taught me just how much of a badass I could be. And I have never forgotten. The video clip above is of the 2011 Cavaliers. I didn’t march with this corps, but it is a nice example of the activity.
Yay for drum corps! I marched for 4 years! It was the best/hardest time ever!

Skagen, Denmark.
This is where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet. Because their densities differ, they can’t merge which is what creates this distinct line. When I visited a couple of years ago, you could see the waves as the seas hit each other. Tourists gathered around and paddled in the waters [apparently too dangerous to swim due to the currents] of this phenomenon. It was one of the quietest moments of my life. I just stood and reflected, forgetting the noise of the people and instead, concentrated on the sounds of nature. It was like one of those moments in a movie when everything clicks in to place and you have dramatic heartfelt music playing in the background.
Well, now I need to go to Denmark.
